Dental implants can be used to permanently replace missing teeth. They can be used in conjunction with dental crowns to replace dental implantsindividual teeth, or they can be used to replaces several teeth by anchoring a bridge or overdenture in place. To help you decide if dental implants are right for your needs, Dr. Terence Geary and Dr. Mary Eileen Geary of Brookfield's Geary Dentistry are readily available to give their guidance and provide treatment.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants function similarly to the roots of natural teeth by securely anchoring artificial teeth in place. The implant resembles a small screw and is usually made from titanium, which is a hypoallergenic metal. The metal implant is inserted into the jawbone through a minor surgical procedure. In the weeks following placement of the implant, it will begin fusing with the jawbone. Once the two are permanently fused together, the metal implant can securely anchor a dental crown, bridgework, or overdenture in place.

When individual teeth are being replaced, a dental implant is needed for each missing tooth. After the implant is securely in place, an abutment is placed over the top of it. A dental crown, which serves as the replacement tooth, is then connected to the abutment. When multiple teeth are being replaced simultaneously with bridgework or an overdenture, the several dental implants are used to hold the prosthetic teeth securely in place.

Benefits of Dental Implants

There are many benefits to choosing dental implants when filling in gaps in your smile by replacing missing teeth. Placement of dental implants is permanent so there is no risk of the implant or the artificial teeth coming loose, slipping out of place, or falling off. Dental implants are also extremely durable and can last for several years with proper care. In addition to being long-lasting, dental implants are also hypoallergenic.

Several of the benefits of dental implants are also cosmetic and result from filling in the gaps caused by missing teeth. Speech can also improve as tongue placement is corrected once the missing teeth's gaps are filled in.
