A dental crown is a definitive and dependable treatment for tooth damage. When decay is too severe for a filling or a traumatic injury has destroyed a large portion of enamel, a new ‘cap’ can be put on the injured tooth. Stop living in pain or worrying about your smile Crownsand consult the experts at Geary Dentistry to discuss how a crown can change your life!

Although most people have heard the term ‘dental crown,’ many are unsure exactly what it means. It refers to an artificial top that replaces the tooth’s enamel, the hard outer part of the tooth. Sometimes small breaks or holes in the enamel (cavities) can simply be repaired by removing any decay and filling the hole with a filling material. However, when the decay is so severe, or injury so extensive that an entire section of enamel must be removed and replaced, this is where crowns come in. The forces that get applied to teeth in the everyday processes of eating and chewing are actually quite extreme, so the structural integrity of a tooth is of the utmost importance. Crowns can be made of different materials- gold, porcelain, a combination of both, or other new types of technologically advanced ceramics and resins invented for dental use. Your dentist will help you choose the best material for a combination of durability and cosmetic appeal to suit your personal needs.

Placement Procedure

Getting a crown placed will usually require two visits; the preparation appointment and the placement appointment. Sometimes a follow-up is also necessary. Your comfort is always our priority.
At the first appointment, the decayed, cracked or damaged portion of the tooth is removed and the enamel is shaped to provide a uniform surface for attachment of the crown. Often a core material must be added to help provide this uniform surface. Impressions are then made and sent to a dental laboratory that designs and creates a custom-fitting crown for your mouth, smile, and bite. Finally, a temporary crown is made to cover the site, allowing you to function comfortably in-between appointments. At your next visit, the temporary crown is removed, and your custom crown is adhered with resin or cement. If needed, a follow-up appointment may be scheduled to ensure your satisfaction and comfort with your dental treatment.

With good oral care and regular preventive hygiene appointments, crowns can last a lifetime! This strong and aesthetically pleasing technology could be the solution you’ve been looking for to repair damaged teeth and get your pain-free smile back.
